We the Voters: Constitutional Choices and the Future of American Elections

How should Americans choose their leaders? Who gets to decide the rules governing elections? And what role does the Constitution play in shaping our democracy? These questions guided a rich and engaging discussion hosted by the Menard Center for Constitutional Studies on October 5th, featuring UW–Eau Claire alumna and nationally recognized scholar Lori Ringhand.

Drawing from themes in her new book, We the Voters: The Constitutional Choices That Shape America’s Elections, Ringhand explored the history and structure of the American electoral system — including the Electoral College, voting rules, representation, and the role of courts in election disputes. In clear and accessible language, she examined why debates about democracy remain deeply contested and how the Constitution leaves many essential questions of self‑government in the hands of the American people.

Ringhand, a professor at the University of Georgia School of Law, is widely known for her scholarship on the Supreme Court and constitutional change. Her return to UW–Eau Claire offered students and community members a unique opportunity to engage directly with one of the nation’s leading constitutional scholars on issues that continue to shape American public life.
